Updated October 2026
Florida lets a homeowner trim shoreline mangroves that are no taller than 10 feet, never below 6 feet and without stripping their leaves. Taller mangroves must be trimmed or supervised by a professional mangrove trimmer, trees over 16 feet come down in yearly stages, and anything over 24 feet needs state authorization.
Why mangrove trimming has its own rules
Mangroves hold Tampa Bay's shorelines together and shelter the fish and birds that use them, so Florida's Mangrove Trimming and Preservation Act sets the limits. It allows trimming for a view or water access along a riparian mangrove fringe, the band that grows no more than 50 feet out from the shore.
Removal is a different matter: the trimming exemptions do not cover taking mangroves out.

What mangrove trimming costs
Mangrove work is priced by the length of shoreline and the height of the stand.
- Shoreline lengthMore fringe, more hours.
- Stand heightTaller trees need staged work.
- AccessShore, dock or boat side.
- Professional trimmerNeeded over 10 feet.
- PermitOnly for the largest jobs.
- DebrisHauled, never left in the water.
Shoreline view trimming
Most calls are about the view: mangroves that were waist high when the house was bought now block the water from the lanai. Trimming opens a window by reducing the height and shaping the top, never below 6 feet from the mud and never stripping a tree bare. On a shoreline longer than 150 feet only about two of every three mangroves can be trimmed, so the work is planned around the sightlines that matter most to you, usually from the lanai, the pool deck and the dock.
Dock and seawall clearance
Red mangroves push prop roots and branches toward docks, boat lifts and seawalls. Clearance trimming keeps the walkway and the boat slip usable without cutting the fringe back further than the law allows. Mangroves growing into a seawall can be trimmed as part of maintaining that wall, which is a separate allowance in the state rules. We work from the shore or the dock and keep cut material out of the water, where it would otherwise wash back against the seawall.
Maintenance trims on trimmed fringes
A fringe that was trimmed legally before, whether under the homeowner exemption or a past permit, can be kept at that height and shape, which makes regular maintenance the easiest mangrove work to schedule. Waiting several years means the trees grow past the 10 foot mark and the job moves into the category that needs a professional mangrove trimmer. A trim every year or two keeps the view open and the work simple, and the stand stays healthy because each cut stays light.
Tall mangrove trimming in stages
Mangroves taller than 16 feet are reduced in stages so that no more than a quarter of the foliage comes off in a year, and trees over 24 feet need authorization from the state before any trimming. We measure the stand first and tell you which category it falls in. If it needs a professional mangrove trimmer or a permit, you hear that on the first visit, before any cutting is scheduled, along with what the staged plan would look like year by year.
Which mangrove category is yours?
| Factor | Under 10 feet | 10 to 24 feet |
|---|---|---|
| Who can trim | Homeowner or crew | Professional mangrove trimmer |
| Lowest height | 6 feet | 6 feet, in stages over 16 feet |
| Paperwork | Usually none | Depends on height and county |
What a mangrove trimming visit covers
- Height of the stand measured from the mud
- Shoreline length and fringe depth checked
- Category confirmed before any cut
- Trimmed to 6 feet or higher, never stripped
- Cut material kept out of the water
- Next maintenance trim noted
Mangrove rules around Tampa Bay
The height limits come from Florida's Mangrove Trimming and Preservation Act and apply around Tampa Bay. Pinellas County also asks that a professional mangrove trimmer working on stands over 10 feet be registered with the county, notify county staff in advance and be on site during the work. We check the rules for your shoreline before quoting, so the view you are promised is one the law allows.
